Asterix: Great Gallery number one

Starting in 2011 Hachette released figurines from the characters we are all too familiar with through a monthly subscription service. Every month subscribers received a new figurine. The series, named Grande Galerie des personnages, kicked off with this Asterix figurine inspired by the album “Asterix and the Cauldron”.

The complete series consists of 70 different figurines and these days they are wanted objects by Asterix enthusiasts. On trading websites the average price for a figurine is about 20 euro. The subscription was only available, as many of Hachette’s subscription programs, to people in France, Belgium and Quebec. This makes it harder for people who live elsewhere to get these figurines. A practice Hachette continues to this day with their other subscription programs.

Every figurine, made of resin, came with a small book (Fr. Livrette) with some background information, in French, about the character, the album from which it was taken, how the figurine was made and more. A certificate of authenticity was included as well. These little books alone are sometimes sold for around five to ten euro’s. Probably because the figurine didn’t always survive. The material makes some of them quite fragile.

Collecting

You could start your subscription at any moment, but also stop it at any moment. If you started your subscription after the initial release date you would not receive the figurines that were released before that date. It stands to reason that most people started their subscription early on, only to stop it after a few months. This is why the figurines that were released later on in the series are usually harder to find.

This was however the first release in the series and is still quite easy to purchase on sites like Ebay or Vinted.
