The Indomitables

Dogmatix and the indomitables (Fr. Idéfix et les Irréductibles) is a French animated television series set in the Asterix universe and centered around Dogmatix. Created by Hachette Livre and developed by Studio 58 and GMT Productions, the series is a prequel to the main Asterix stories.

It follows Dogmatix and a small group of animal companions—the indomitables—as they resist Roman occupation in Lutetia in 52 BCE. The show first premiered online on July 2, 2021, and later aired on France Télévisions starting August 28, 2021. The animation style mirrors the visual language of the Asterix comics, and the tone is geared toward younger audiences, combining humor, adventure, and light educational elements.

Each episode lasts approximately eleven minutes. As of 2025, two full seasons have been released, with a total of 104 episodes (52 per season). While no official third season has been confirmed, the show remains active in publication and distribution. The series has been dubbed or subtitled in at least 24 languages and broadcast or streamed in multiple countries, including France, Germany, Canada, Estonia, and Finland. It is available on platforms such as Prime Video, France TV’s Okoo, CANAL+ Jeunesse, TV5MONDEplus, and M6+.

Dogmatix’s team includes characters like Stamina (Fr. Turbine) the female greyhound, Gluttonix (Fr. Padgachix) the strong and hungry bulldog and many more. Together, they oppose the Roman animal control unit led by General Labienus and his Roman dogs. The Roman occupation of Lutetia forms the backdrop for the action, which unfolds in settings like the Roman forum, the banks of the Seine, and the Gallic neighborhoods of the city. Unlike the main Asterix series, the storylines are centered on animals and their perspective. Human characters do appear but play secondary roles.

The series introduces several original characters not found in the Asterix albums. Although the series began first, a line of books has been developed based on its episodes. These include storybooks and illustrated albums that adapt or expand upon the TV material. As of June 2025, eight books have been published, each featuring three stories. While the books contain 24 stories in total, the TV show includes over 100 narrative episodes, indicating that not all episodes have been adapted into print.

The albums

The books are primarily published in French and German, with limited availability in other languages. The show represents the first time Dogmatix has taken center stage in the franchise, offering a child-friendly entry point into the Asterix universe. It also reinforces environmental themes, such as protecting nature and resisting urban development, often linked to the Roman threat. The animation features vivid colors, energetic action sequences, and a recurring musical theme. Each episode follows a self-contained story, though recurring characters and locations provide continuity. The humor is situational and visual, relying less on wordplay than the original comics. Historical references are simplified for accessibility.

The series has been well received among its target audience and is part of a broader effort by Hachette to expand the Asterix brand across media. The voice acting is produced in French, with localized dubs depending on region. Several educational tools and activity books have also been released in connection with the series. The show continues to air on French television and is promoted on the official Asterix website.

Characters

The books introduce us to many new characters. Just as in the Asterix albums the main ones are introduced in the front of the book and in a similar fashion. In the English albums they are called Dogmatix (Fr. Idéfix), Stamina (Fr. Turbine), Gluttonix (Fr. Padgachix), Nocturnix (owl, Fr. Voldenuix), Bantera (cat, Fr. Baratine) and Asmatix (pigeon, Fr. Asmatix). The names a self explanatory and fit the characters very well. Stamina is very fast, Gluttonix is very strong but also very fond of sausages, Nocturnix is an owl and thus nocturnal while Bantera sounds like banter and fits her cheeky and sarcastic personality. Last but not least, Asmatix the old pigeon who is often out of breath.

Among them the animals share many of the same characteristics as Asterix, Obelix, Getafix and all the other villagers. In the stories we also come across many old characters. We meet Lentix, one of the villains in Asterix and the Banquet, as he tries to rob the brother-in-law, Homeopathix, whom we have met in Asterix and the Laurel Wreath. In later albums we are also re-introduced to main characters like Getafix, chief Vitalstatistix and his wife Impedimenta. Thus far Asterix and Obelix have not yet appeared in these albums and my guess is they never will be.
