Bulgaria is a southeastern European country located on the Balkan Peninsula, bordered by Romania, Serbia, North Macedonia, Greece, and Turkey, with a coastline along the Black Sea. It has a rich and ancient history, having been home to Thracian, Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman civilizations. The country is known for its natural beauty, including mountain ranges like the Balkans and Rila, as well as its diverse culture and folklore. Sofia, the capital city, is one of the oldest cities in Europe, with roots going back thousands of years. Bulgaria is a member of the European Union and NATO, yet it maintains a unique cultural identity shaped by its Orthodox Christian tradition and Slavic heritage. Visitors are often drawn to its historic monasteries, traditional villages, and vibrant festivals.

The Bulgarian language

The official language of Bulgaria is Bulgarian, a South Slavic language with close linguistic ties to Macedonian and more distant relations to Serbian, Croatian, and Russian. Bulgarian uses the Cyrillic alphabet, which was developed in the 9th century by disciples of Saints Cyril and Methodius and has since become one of the most widely used scripts in the Slavic world. The modern Bulgarian Cyrillic alphabet consists of 30 letters, each representing a single sound, making the language relatively phonetic. Some of the key letters include А (a as in “car”), Б (b as in “bat”), В (v as in “vet”), Г (g as in “go”), Д (d as in “dog”), Ж (zh as in “measure”), З (z as in “zoo”), И (ee as in “machine”), Й (y as in “boy”), К (k as in “key”), Л (l as in “lamp”), М (m as in “man”), Н (n as in “no”), О (o as in “pot”), П (p as in “pen”), Р (r as in Spanish “pero”), С (s as in “see”), Т (t as in “top”), У (oo as in “boot”), Ф (f as in “fun”), Х (ch as in Scottish “loch”), Ц (ts as in “cats”), Ч (ch as in “cheese”), Ш (sh as in “shop”), Щ (sht, a unique combination), Ъ (a hard “uh” sound not found in English), Ь (a soft sign that affects pronunciation), Ю (yu as in “universe”), and Я (ya as in “yard”). Stress in Bulgarian is unpredictable and not marked in writing, which can make pronunciation challenging for learners. Overall, while the script may seem unfamiliar at first, with some practice it becomes a logical and approachable system for reading and writing the Bulgarian language.

Астерикс говори български

In Bulgaria, the publication of Asterix comic albums has been undertaken by two publishers: Egmont Bulgaria Ltd. and Artline Studios Ltd., both based in Sofia. Egmont Bulgaria began releasing Bulgarian translations in 1992, starting with “Астерикс галският герой” (Asterix the Gaul), and continued with titles such as “Златният сърп” (The Golden Sickle) in 1993 and “Астерикс и Клеопатра” (Asterix and Cleopatra) in the same year. Their publication series extended until 2000, concluding with “Астерикс при бритите” (Asterix in Britain). Artline Studios later took over the publication, re-releasing earlier titles with updated artwork and lettering, beginning with “Астерикс галският герой” (Asterix the Gaul) in 2013, and introducing additional albums like “Обиколката на Галия” (Asterix and the Banquet) in 2019. Despite these efforts, not all Asterix albums have been translated into Bulgarian; as of December 2024, the latest translated title is “Арвенският щит” (Asterix and the Chieftain’s Shield), with several titles still awaiting translation.

Asterix’s name

Notice that the letters on the cover look different—that’s because the title uses a highly stylized Cyrillic display fontdesigned for visual impact, not for readability.

In this font:

  • The Cyrillic Т is drawn with curved, flared serifs, which can make it resemble an M at first glance.
  • The letter ѝ (used to mark stress on the “i” sound) is written with a heavy serif and a grave accent, which in this particular typeface looks almost exactly like a “ù”.
  • Other letters like С, Р, and К are also modified with bold and dramatic strokes, adding to the visual complexity.

This artistic treatment is typical for comic book titles, where the goal is to create a strong, iconic logo-like appearance. While the word is still correctly spelled as АСТЕРѝКС, the font style can make it harder to recognize for readers not used to decorative Cyrillic typefaces.
