Ils sont fous …

The most famous quote by Obelix must be, “These Romans are crazy!”. These words were first uttered in the album Asterix the Gladiator, an album in which we really get acquainted with the Romans and their culture. With the help of the website “Asterix around the World” I have made a list of this famous quote in several other languages.

The best translation of this quote goes to the Italian translator of Asterix, Marcello Marchesi. He has Obelix say “Sono Pazzi questi Romani!“, which can be shortened to S.P.Q.R. which can of course be seen on many Roman signs. S.P.Q.R. stand for Senatus PopulusQue Romanus, which means the Senate and the People of Rome.

The original line in French is “Ils sont fous, ces Romains“. In my native tongue, Dutch, Obelix says “Rare jongens, die Romeinen” (Strange guys, these Romans).
