Carinthian is spoken in Carinthia, the southernmost federal state of Austria. The region borders Italy to the west and south, Slovenia to the south, and the Austrian states of Tyrol, Salzburg, and Styria to the north and east. Carinthia is largely alpine, shaped by mountain ranges, valleys, and lakes that have historically influenced settlement and communication. The River Drava runs through much of the region and has long been a central corridor for trade and cultural exchange. Carinthia has a distinct regional identity within Austria, shaped by its geography and border position. The area has been multilingual for centuries due to close contact with Slavic-speaking regions. Today, this historical background is still reflected in everyday language use.

The Carinthian Dialect

The English name for the German dialect Kärntnerisch is Carinthian, more precisely referred to as Carinthian German. It belongs to the Southern Austro-Bavarian dialect group and differs noticeably from Standard German. Carinthian is particularly known for its characteristic melodic or “sing-song” intonation. Its pronunciation, vocabulary, and grammatical forms set it apart from dialects spoken in regions such as Vienna or Tyrol. In southern parts of Carinthia, Carinthian German coexists with Carinthian Slovene, a recognized minority language. This long-standing bilingualism has led to mutual linguistic influence, especially in vocabulary and place names. As a result, Carinthian represents one of the most distinctive regional forms of German in Austria.
