Dogmatix

Geriatrix is the sprightly and opinionated elder (In Asterix and the Olympic Games he is said to be 93 years of age) of the Asterix village, always eager to remind everyone that age has not diminished his energy. Eventhough he is a veteran he often boasts about his youthfulness and remains active in village affairs. His marriage to a much younger woman adds a touch of comedic irony to his character. First appearing unnamed in Asterix Gladiator, he gained prominence later. Geriatrix embodies tradition, wisdom, and humor, a living testament to the enduring spirit of the Gauls.

Résumé

  • First appearance:

    Asterix the Gladiator

  • Original French name:

    Agecanonix

  • Meaning:

In English, his name is Geriatrix, derived from “geriatric,” humorously highlighting his advanced age despite his youthful energy. In the original French version, he is called Agecanonix, a clever play on âge canonique, referring to a venerable old age, often associated with long-lived figures. The Dutch version names him Nestorix, inspired by Nestor from Greek mythology, known as a wise and respected elder. In German, he is Methusalix, referencing Methuselah, the biblical figure famed for living 969 years, humorously implying that Agecanonix might be just as ancient.

  • Fun fact:

In the illustrated album ‘How Obelix fell into the Magic Potion’ all the villagers are seen as their younger selfs, only Geriatrix and Getafix haven’t changed.
